The 2023 Toyota HiLux Rogue is the tough-guy variant Aussies asked for: wider track, beefier suspension and—finally—rear disc brakes. The familiar 2.8‑litre turbo‑diesel (about 150 kW/500 Nm) and six‑speed auto still do the heavy lifting, with 3,500 kg braked towing for the work-and-weekend crowd.
On-road it feels more planted than a regular HiLux, though it’s still a ladder-frame ute, so the ride is firm when the tub’s empty and the steering prefers commitment over finesse. Inside, it’s durable rather than dazzling, with a tidy screen, smartphone mirroring and plenty of safety kit, but newer rivals look and feel fresher. If you want a dual-cab that’s dependable, tougher-looking and better to drive than the vanilla versions, the Rogue nails the brief; just don’t expect luxury-car hush or bargain pricing.
