toyota prado 120 series problems

The Toyota Prado 120 Series (2003–2009) is tough as old boots, but even boots get holes if you stomp through enough creeks. Here are the commonly reported gremlins to watch for:

  • Diesel injectors and seats (1KD-FTV): cold-start rattle, blow-by and, in worst cases, damaged pistons; budget for fresh injectors if the history’s vague.
  • EGR and intake soot build-up: robs power and economy over time; periodic cleaning keeps it breathing.
  • Radiator/transmission cooler cross-contamination: the dreaded “pink milkshake”; ageing radiators and towing increase risk—separate cooler and preventative maintenance help.
  • Driveline clunk: tailshaft slip-yoke thunk on take-off; regular greasing, and keep an eye on CV boots, suspension bushes and wheel bearings after off-road fun.

Most are brilliantly reliable if serviced on time, so chase solid records and get a pre-purchase inspection before you point it at the Simpson.
