toyota prado alternator problems

Prado flashing the battery light and sounding grumpy? That’s the alternator auditioning for retirement.

  • Worn brushes or a tired voltage regulator give low charge (under ~13.5 V) and reluctant starts.
  • Clutch/pulley squeal or seizure after dust, mud, or creek crossings is common.
  • Dual batteries, fridges, light bars and winches can overheat diodes and stators.
  • Dodgy earths or a frayed B+ lead can mimic a “dead” alternator.

Measure at the battery: you want ~13.8–14.4 V at warm idle with loads on; if it droops well below, it’s rebuild time.

Expect AUD $400–$1,200 for a decent replacement plus labour; replace the belt, clean grounds, and right-size your accessory charging so you don’t do this dance twice.
