As thrilling as unbraked momentum is, WA keeps it sensible: trailers up to 750 kg don’t need service brakes. From 751–2000 kg, you must have brakes on at least one axle, and override (mechanical/hydraulic) systems are generally acceptable.
Over 2000 kg up to 4500 kg, you’ll need brakes on all wheels, power-operated from the tow vehicle, plus a breakaway system that applies the brakes if the trailer detaches. Make sure your towbar, coupling and brake controller are correctly rated, and don’t exceed the vehicle’s towing limits unless you enjoy roadside lectures. These are the common thresholds used across Australia and applied by DoT WA. Consult official documentation for exact figures.
