Handing the keys to family in Queensland is sweet; the paperwork, less so.
You’ll usually need a current Queensland safety certificate to transfer a registered car (unless an exemption applies), then lodge the transfer with Transport and Main Roads (TMR) online or in person within 14 days.
Both parties need ID (Qld licence or a TMR customer reference), the VIN/rego, sale or gift details, and, if prompted, an odometer reading; the buyer pays the transfer fee and vehicle duty (family gifts don’t automatically dodge duty).
If the rego’s expired, it’s an unregistered transfer—expect extra steps and costs; if personalised plates are staying with you, swap or surrender them first.
Keep a receipt or gift letter, tell the insurer, and enjoy the warm fuzzies while Uncle Barry resists “testing” the handbrake on a boat ramp.
