transfer car wa Page 8

In WA, you need to transfer the vehicle licence within 14 days of purchase via DoTDirect or at a Driver and Vehicle Services centre—no dawdling, the clock is louder than a loose lifter. The buyer pays the transfer fee and vehicle licence duty (based on the dutiable value), while the seller lodges a notice of disposal so fines and rego don’t follow them home. Have your ID, VIN, odometer reading and date of sale ready; if there’s finance, make sure it’s cleared or recorded on the PPSR before handing over cash.

Miss the 14‑day window and you can cop late fees or penalties—more painful than stepping on Lego in thongs. For unlicensed or defected vehicles, you may need an inspection or permit before driving, so don’t play roulette with the rego. Keep copies of everything; bureaucracy sleeps lightly and loves a tidy paper trail.
