In Queensland you don’t really “transfer number plates” so much as transfer the registration; standard plates stay on the car, as nature intended.
If the vehicle’s sold within QLD, buyer and seller lodge a rego transfer with TMR within 14 days; the seller supplies a current safety certificate, the buyer pays transfer duty, and everyone goes home slightly poorer but legal. Personalised or prestige plates are the exception: ownership or reassignment is done via Personalised Plates Queensland (PPQ) with the right forms (or online), signatures and a fee.
Moving plates between your own cars? Do a reassignment through PPQ, then fit them only once the rego’s updated—no freelancing with plates, thanks. Buying from interstate? You generally can’t “transfer” those plates into QLD; register the car in QLD and surrender the old plates as instructed. Check TMR and PPQ for the latest fees and forms before you queue, because nothing ruins a Friday like out‑of‑date paperwork.
