The Type 74 is Japan’s Cold War main battle tank, built by Mitsubishi and fielded from the mid‑1970s—think samurai discipline with a very big stick.

It packs a 105 mm rifled main gun, a crew of four, and that party‑trick hydropneumatic suspension that can kneel or lean like it’s posing for a brochure.

Early versions were fairly old‑school in fire control, but upgrades added laser rangefinding and thermal sights, keeping it relevant longer than you’d expect.

Armour is conventional steel rather than modern composite wizardry, so survivability relied on tactics and a lower profile rather than brute force.
