In Queensland, buying from a licensed used car dealer usually nets you a statutory warranty, not the “good luck, mate” you get with private sales. If the car is under 10 years old and has under 160,000 km at sale, the dealer must cover defects for 3 months or 5,000 km (whichever comes first); older or higher‑km cars get 1 month or 1,000 km. It covers defects that make the car unroadworthy or unfit for normal use, but not wear-and-tear, abuse, or issues already disclosed in writing. Auctions and some vehicle types have carve-outs, and anything sold “as is” with a defect notice isn’t getting a cuddle. Keep your receipts, report faults promptly in writing, and give the dealer a fair shot at repairs before sharpening the pitchforks.
