used car reliability ratings Page 15

Used car reliability ratings aren’t magic; they’re a mash-up of fault frequency, repair severity, cost, and age/kilometres.

In broad strokes, Toyota, Lexus, Mazda, Subaru, and Hyundai often score well, while complex turbo or luxury models can dip as the gadgets age.

Look up ratings by exact model year and engine, then cross-check with service history, recall lists, and a pre-purchase inspection—numbers are great, but spanners tell the truth.

Favour cars with regular servicing, documented timing belt/chain care, and low owner-count, and budget for fluids, tyres, and suspension refresh to keep a “reliable” car actually reliable.
