Buy a used car from a licensed dealer in Victoria and you may get a statutory warranty if the car is under 10 years old and has travelled less than 160,000 km at the time of sale.
The warranty runs for 3 months or 5,000 km (whichever comes first) and the dealer must fix covered faults—no, not your cousin with a socket set.
It doesn’t apply to private sales or most auctions, and it excludes normal wear items, misuse, and any defects clearly disclosed in writing.
Keep everything in writing, report issues promptly, and remember that consumer guarantees under the ACL also apply to dealer sales, which helps keep everyone honest.
