In NSW, the general maximum vehicle height on public roads is 4.3 metres; anything taller needs specific approval or to be on an approved network. Certain heavy vehicles (think car carriers and livestock rigs) can run up to about 4.6 metres, but only on designated routes and with the right permissions. If you’re just a tall 4WD with a roof rack and a dream, keep it under 4.3 metres or expect a chat you won’t enjoy.
Tunnels, bridges and overpasses have posted clearances—obey them religiously, because steel is famously unforgiving. Car parks often sit around 2.0–2.2 metres, so many lifted utes and vans will cop a “thunk” if you guess. Measure your rig from the ground to the tallest bit (antennas, light bars, kayaks included), and if your load pushes you over 4.3 metres, you’re in permit territory—no exceptions, no heroics.
