In NSW, you can modify your car, but anything beyond simple bolt-ons must comply with ADRs and, for significant changes, be certified under the VSCCS by an approved engineer.
Minor add-ons—roof racks, tow bars, bull bars and wheels within manufacturer limits—generally need to be ADR-compliant and properly fitted; big-ticket changes like engine swaps, major brake or suspension alterations, steering, seating or GVM changes need certification.
Whatever you do, the vehicle must stay roadworthy, meet emissions and noise rules, and not exceed plated masses—oversize lifts and tyres can earn you a defect faster than you can say “blue slip.”
After certification, keep the paperwork, update rego details if required, and tell your insurer—surprises are for birthdays, not claims.
When in doubt, check current Transport for NSW/Service NSW guidance or speak to a VSCCS engineer before the spanners come out.
