vehicle transfer fee vic Page 438

In Victoria, “vehicle transfer fee” usually means two hits to the wallet: a fixed VicRoads transfer fee and motor vehicle duty (stamp duty) based on the car’s market value.

The transfer fee is a set admin charge to update the records—separate from duty, which scales with price, with higher rates for pricier or “luxury” cars and concessions for some low‑emission vehicles and primary producers.

You’ll also need a current roadworthy certificate (unless exempt), which you pay a licensed tester for, not VicRoads; new plates or a plate transfer can add their own small costs.

Registration and TAC charges typically stay with the car until they expire—so you don’t re‑pay rego at transfer—unless the rego’s lapsed, in which case you’re into re‑registration territory.

Budget a few hundred to several thousand for duty depending on value; the admin transfer fee itself is comparatively small.
