In Victoria, a Certificate of Roadworthiness is what VicRoads wants when a car is sold or re‑registered—yes, even your “mint” Commodore.

It’s issued by a licensed vehicle tester and checks safety items like brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, windscreen, and structural rust, not whether your Bluetooth drops out.

The certificate is generally valid for 30 days from issue for transfer purposes, so don’t sit on it like a seagull on hot chips.

Costs aren’t set by VicRoads, but expect a typical passenger‑car inspection to be a couple of hundred AUD, plus any repairs and possible reinspection fees.

Book with a licensed tester, fix any defects they list, and you’re good to hand over plates and paperwork without drama.

For precise rules and any exemptions, consult VicRoads’ official documentation.
