Looking up VicRoads towing rules? Here’s the brisk version: your combo must not exceed the lowest rated limit of the vehicle, towbar and trailer, and you follow posted speed limits—no special towing speed in Victoria.
Trailers over 750 kg ATM need brakes; over 2,000 kg require a working breakaway system. Use rated safety chains (one up to 2.5 t ATM, two above that), and if your rear view is blocked, fit towing mirrors so you can see at least 20 m behind and about 4 m to each side.
Lights, number plate and reflectors must work, the load must be secured, and no passengers in the trailer—no, not even the in-laws. Distribute weight sensibly with around 7–10% of the trailer’s weight on the tow ball to keep sway at bay.
That’s the gist; the longer version lives with VicRoads and your vehicle’s handbook—read both before you hitch and hope.
