In Victoria, plates generally stay with the vehicle; what you actually transfer after a sale is the registration, and only personalised plates have transferable “rights to display.”
For a rego transfer, lodge it via your myVicRoads account within 14 days, supply proof of purchase and a current roadworthy (if required), and pay the transfer fee plus motor vehicle duty.
Want the plates themselves? Personalised plates can be assigned to another vehicle or person through VicRoads with ID from both parties and a transfer/assignment fee.
You may retain personalised plates when selling—fit standard plates first or arrange at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre—so your “S1MPLYRED” doesn’t leave with the car.
If cancelling rego or changing plate style, follow VicRoads instructions on surrendering or returning plates.
