Victoria’s child car seat laws are straightforward: use an Australian Standard–approved restraint that suits the child’s age and size, fitted snugly. Up to 6 months: rearward-facing only. From 6 months to under 4 years: rearward- or forward-facing seat with an in‑built harness. From 4 to under 7 years: a booster seat used with a properly fastened and adjusted seatbelt; keep them harnessed if they still fit. Under-7s can’t sit in the front seat when the car has two or more rows; 4–7s may only go up front if all other seats are already filled by kids under 7. From 7 years they may use an adult seatbelt if it fits correctly, though a booster is wise until they pass the five‑step test—yes, fiddly, but cheaper than a fine and safer than guesswork.
