In Victoria, your learner driver permit (the L-plate life) starts at age 16 after a knowledge test and an eyesight check. You must carry your permit, display L plates front and rear, have a fully licensed supervisor, keep a zero BAC, and stash the phone—no calls, no texts, no “just a quick map”. If you’re under 21, you’ll need at least 120 logged hours including 20 at night before going for your Ps; 21–25 and 25+ have no hour minimums, but more practice beats more panel beaters. To graduate to a provisional licence you must hold Ls for at least 12 months (under 21), 6 months (21–24), or 3 months (25+), then pass the Hazard Perception and Drive Test. It’s not glamorous, but it does turn “learning” into “licence” without decorating any gutters.
