what does service steering column lock mean Page 1845

That “Service Steering Column Lock” message means the car thinks the electronic steering lock isn’t behaving, so the wheel may not lock or unlock as it should.

It’s common on keyless/start‑button cars; sometimes it’s low battery voltage, other times the lock module or its tiny motor has downed tools.

• Low or dying 12V battery
• Faulty steering lock (ESL/ELV) module or motor
• Key/immobiliser or ignition reader miscommunication
• Blown fuse or wiring fault

First checks: test or charge the battery, try the spare key, gently wiggle the wheel while starting, and scan for fault codes.

If the wheel won’t unlock, don’t force it—get it towed; if it does unlock and drives, it may be okay short‑term, but fix it before you end up stranded at Bunnings.

Typical cure is a new lock module or a software update—unglamorous, but less painful than arm‑wrestling your steering wheel.
