what does yaris mean Page 160

“Yaris” isn’t ancient wisdom etched on a temple wall; it’s a marketer’s mash‑up.

Toyota says it blends “Ya” (from the German “Ja”, meaning “yes”) with “Charis,” the Greek goddesses of grace, to suggest an upbeat, elegant little thing.

So, roughly: “a cheerful yes to grace,” which is very on‑brand for a city car that parks in spaces you’d swear were theoretical.

In some countries it launched as Vitz, but Yaris stuck because it sounds sprightly without scaring the insurance company.
