what is a black box car Page 9680

A “black box” car isn’t auditioning for a spy film; it’s simply a vehicle with a telematics/Event Data Recorder that logs driving data.

It records things like speed, acceleration, braking, steering inputs, seatbelt status and sometimes GPS time/location, helping insurers, fleet managers and crash investigators make sense of what actually happened.

In Australia, access to that data typically needs your consent or proper legal authority, and insurers will tell you if they’re using a plug-in or built-in unit.

Upside: safer habits and sometimes cheaper premiums; downside: privacy jitters if you fancy the odd dawn bakery blast.

In short, it’s a tattletale box that can be very handy when things go pear-shaped, otherwise quietly minding its ones and zeroes.
