what is a satellite phone

A satellite phone is a mobile phone that connects directly to orbiting satellites instead of relying on terrestrial cell towers. This clever bit of tech lets you make calls, send texts, and even access data services from the middle of nowhere—be it the outback, the ocean, or the Arctic tundra. Key features include global coverage, robust build, and usually a hefty price tag both for the handset and the airtime. Prices for new units can range from $700 to $2000 AUD, while used models might be found for less on sites like Tradingpost. However, expect your monthly bills to be significantly higher than regular mobile plans. For anyone needing reliable comms beyond the reach of traditional networks, a satellite phone is a lifeline worth considering.
