Shift lock is the car’s overprotective chaperone: it stops an automatic from leaving Park unless your foot is on the brake, preventing roll-aways and accidental gear changes.

When the battery gives up or the switch throws a tantrum, you can use the shift-lock release—usually a small covered slot by the shifter—to mechanically override it while holding the brake.

That gets you into Neutral so you can tow or nudge the car without resorting to caveman tactics.
