what is vin and chasis number Page 9

A VIN is the car’s fingerprint: a 17-character code that identifies the make, model, year, and where it was built.

A “chassis number” is the older term for the frame or body identifier; on modern cars in Australia it’s effectively the same as the VIN, but older imports and classics may have a separate chassis stamp.

You’ll find the VIN on the windscreen base, driver’s door jamb, and in your rego and insurance papers.

It’s used for registration, recalls, and parts matching—so quoting it saves you from ordering the wrong widget.

If plates don’t match the paperwork, walk away briskly and take your wallet with you.
