what to do if car battery is drained

Flat battery? Happens to the best of us, and the forgetful ones who love interior lights.

• First, check for obvious culprits (lights left on), then try a jump-start with proper polarity: red to positive, black to a clean earth on the dead car.
• No donor car? Use a jump pack; manuals can be push-started, autos cannot.
• Once running, drive 20–30 minutes to recharge, then test the battery and alternator; replace the battery if it’s 4–5 years old or weak.
• If it won’t crank after a jump, call roadside assist—could be a dud battery, corroded terminals, or a failed alternator.

Keep a basic kit in the boot (jumper leads, gloves), and your future self will thank you with fewer swear words.
