A VIN is your car’s 17-character fingerprint—unique, immutable, and far less smudgy than the one on your window after a servo pie.
It’s structured as WMI (who built it), VDS (what it is), and VIS (when/where it was made), standardised worldwide since 1981.
You’ll find it at the base of the windscreen on the dash, on the driver’s door jamb, and on rego/insurance papers—bureaucracy loves a good code.
In Australia it’s used for registrations, recalls, finance checks and stolen-vehicle searches, so knowing it can spare you headaches and awkward conversations.
