Tare weight (or tare mass) is your vehicle’s weight when it’s empty—no passengers, no cargo, no accessories bolted on for bragging rights.
It typically includes standard fluids and equipment, but excludes payload; think “what it weighs sitting in the driveway, doing nothing.”
It matters because payload = GVM minus tare, so if your ute has a GVM of 3,200 kg and a tare of 2,100 kg, you’ve got about 1,100 kg to play with before the fun turns illegal.
Don’t confuse it with kerb weight, which many sources quote with a full tank and can be a touch higher. Check your rego papers or the manufacturer’s plate for the figure specific to your vehicle in Australia.
