when is a car weiteoff Page 8712

In Australia, a car is deemed a write‑off when it’s either unsafe to repair or not economically sensible to fix compared with its market value. There are two buckets: Statutory Write‑Off (severe structural/fire/flood/stripped damage; can’t be re‑registered) and Repairable Write‑Off (damage costs make repairs uneconomic; can sometimes return to the road after approved repairs and inspections). Insurers weigh repair costs, parts, paint, labour and salvage value against what the car’s worth in AUD—if the maths looks ugly, it’s curtains. The result is recorded on the National Written‑Off Vehicle Register (WOVR). Rules vary by state; for example, NSW tightly restricts what repairable write‑offs can be re‑registered, with limited exceptions like hail. When in doubt, check your state authority’s guidance and your insurer’s policy wording before the tow truck disappears over the horizon.
