Mt Buller is in Victoria's Alpine region, near the town of Mansfield, roughly 230 km north-east of Melbourne.
Figure on around 3 to 3.5 hours' drive from the CBD via Maroondah Highway to Mansfield and then up Mt Buller Road (C320) — long enough for the playlist to get weird.
The summit is about 1,805 m, with the village around 1,600 m, so yes, it's properly alpine and your lungs may file a complaint.
In winter you'll park in designated areas and use oversnow transport, making the last leg feel like a polar expedition, only with better coffee.
