You can’t stare at a solar eclipse because the Sun hasn’t suddenly become polite; its intense visible and invisible light can damage your retina.
During the dim phases your pupils open wider, letting in more concentrated energy, and your retina—bless it—has no pain receptors to warn you.
Result: photochemical (and sometimes thermal) damage called solar retinopathy, which can cause permanent blind spots after just seconds.
Use only ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses, a proper solar filter on binoculars/telescopes, or indirect viewing methods like a pinhole projector; sunglasses are useless.
Partial and annular phases are the risky bits; totality is safe only while it’s truly, completely total—blink and you’ll miss the safe window.
If you value your eyesight more than a braggy photo, follow the rules and keep the peepers intact.
