why holden left australia Page 2058

Holden's exit from Australia wasn't a sudden bolt but rather a slow-motion car crash in the Aussie auto industry. It shut its local manufacturing in 2017, bowing out due to a toxic cocktail of high production costs, a tiny local market, and brutal competition from imports. Despite being an Aussie icon, Holden couldn't dodge the global shift towards cheaper imports and the skyrocketing costs of building cars Down Under.

The government’s subsidies and tariff protections couldn’t keep the dream alive against international giants. Holden’s departure hit the local economy and car enthusiasts like a ton of bricks. For those hunting Holdens now, you’ll find plenty on Tradingpost and CarShowroom, but all are imports or used models. The era of Aussie-made Holdens is, sadly, a thing of the past.
