Short answer: no national plan to ban diesels outright, and certainly not tomorrow.
The ACT intends to end sales of new fossil-fuelled light vehicles by 2035, but elsewhere there’s no legislated phase‑out; used diesels will remain road‑legal regardless. From 2025, the federal New Vehicle Efficiency Standard tightens CO₂ limits, which will make thirsty diesel utes and SUVs pricier to sell new unless they get cleaner tech. Heavy vehicles are a different kettle of fish and aren’t on any near-term hit list. So yes, the tide’s turning, but your current diesel isn’t about to be confiscated at the servo. Keep an eye on policy updates, but for now it’s evolution, not execution.
