best plb for 4wd Page 4

For 4WD touring in Australia, the best PLB is the one that ticks the right boxes, not the flashiest one on Instagram.

Look for 406 MHz with GPS/GNSS (Cospas–Sarsat), 121.5 MHz homing, IP67–IP68 water/dust rating, and a 5–7 year battery; register it with AMSA (free) and keep it in-cab, not buried under the swag.

Top picks commonly praised are the GME MT610G (Aussie-made and tough), ACR ResQLink series, and Ocean Signal rescueME PLB1—compact, reliable, and easy to deploy with cold fingers.

Satellite messengers (Garmin inReach, Zoleo) are brilliant for keeping the group chat alive, but they’re not a substitute for a PLB in a life-or-limb emergency.

Pair the PLB with a UHF, first-aid kit, and a bit of common sense, and your recovery story won’t have to be a search-and-rescue epic.
