ev fbt exemption australia Page 687

In Australia, the EV FBT exemption lets employers provide eligible electric cars with no Fringe Benefits Tax sting—yes, your accountant can unclench now.

To qualify, the car must be first held and used on or after 1 July 2022, be a battery electric, hydrogen fuel‑cell, or (until 31 March 2025) a plug‑in hybrid, and its price must be under the fuel‑efficient Luxury Car Tax threshold for the relevant year.

From 1 April 2025, PHEVs generally drop off the invite list, unless there’s a binding arrangement in place from earlier—so new PHEV deals after that date won’t get the exemption.

Running costs bundled with the car (think rego, insurance, charging, servicing) can be covered and still exempt, but the value is typically reported as a reportable fringe benefits amount for the employee.

It plays especially nicely with novated leases, shifting costs pre‑tax and often trimming the household budget without resorting to instant noodles.

State incentives vary and the rules can change, so confirm details with the ATO or your salary packaging provider before signing anything.
