Dropping an LS1 into a Hilux is the automotive equivalent of espresso in your Milo—rowdy, effective, and absolutely not subtle. It’s doable in Australia, but you’ll need engineering approval per your state (VSB 14/NCOP), emissions compliance, and serious upgrades to brakes, cooling, fuel system, and driveline to keep it all together. A healthy LS1 5.7‑litre with the right gearbox, loom, mounts, exhaust and certification typically lands around AUD $15k–$30k DIY, or $25k–$40k+ with a shop doing the heavy lifting. Insurance and rego won’t play nice unless the paperwork and testing are spot on.

It’ll transform the ute from tradie-spec to tyre-vaporiser, but budget for the unglamorous bits—diff ratios, tailshaft, heat management—and plan it properly. Do it right and it’s grin-inducing; do it cheap and it’s a grenade with number plates.
