Following on from the historic success of Ducati’s iconic 916, in 1999 Ducati increased the Desmoquattro engine to 996cc and for WSB Homologation, produced a limited number SPS (Sport Production Special) models. While the Strada & Biposto models received negligible upgrades, the SPS got plenty of fruit; a more powerful engine that weighed less than the 916 thanks titanium internals & larger 98mm pistons, larger valves, a stronger crankshaft and the stronger 916SPS crankcases machined to accept the larger barrels. The peaky 916 cam profile was modified to delivery more torque at less revs; the 916SPS produced 83.5 kW (112.0 hp) whereas the 996SPS made 92.4 kW (123.9 hp). Other improvement were a revised air intake system, larger air with two fuel injectors per cylinder. A new airbox and a larger exhaust system, and lots of oem carbon accessories.

In addition to engine upgrades, the SPS frame was also improved, and it received lighter, stronger wheels and improved Brembo Goldline calipers, and stronger discs & brake pads compared to the 916. While almost all the 99 production received the same Showa suspension system, some of the last 1999 production received the much preferred 2000 spec Ohlin’s front & rear, plus 5 spoke Marchesini light-weight wheels.

The total two-year production of 916SPS’ was a tiny 1,780 bikes, with only 51 of the first production ever destined for Australia. The example offered here is one of those 51 Austral delivered bikes, and has travelled less than 15,000 k’s in the last 19 years. The bike is very original save for some minor retro-fitted items that can be replaced by the original equipment items that are included with the sale.
