In 2001 Ducati released a limited build of 500 996R’s, the suffix standing for ‘Racing’. The R sported full Öhlins, full carbon fiber bodywork, a revised and more streamlined fairing, but most importantly the newly redesigned Testastretta engine with increased capacity from 996 to 998cc.

Testastretta means narrow head in Ital, and this referred to the new engines narrower valve angle, down to only 25 degrees, which was designed by Ing. Marchetti, formerly of Ferrari F1. The engine also featured more aggressive camshafts, titanium conrods and a shorter stroke and wider bore, which allowed it to rev more safely at high RPMs. It produced 98.5 kW (136 bhp) at 10,200 RPM with a maximum torque of 105 Nm at 8000 RPM. Most of the chassis was the same as the 996 SPS, but using a new Brembo braking system, with thinner discs and 4-pad, 4-pot calipers with 34mm pistons.

This spectacularly original example is a 1 owner, Austral delivered and purchased from Fraser Motorcycles. Meticulously maintained it has travelled only 2,131k’s from new, and less than 150 k’s since its first major service, including valve clearances, belts and all fluids.  Sale includes all owner’s handbooks, both keys, original purchase receipt, still in the Fraser’s envelope, OEM complt mufflers & ECU, original bike cover and service receipts.

This bike was signed (on tank) by Try Bayliss before purchase, and the signature has been clear lacquered for longevity.
