Rachmaninoff – Corelli Variations, Op. 42 (piano)

Composed in 1931, Rachmaninoff’s Corelli Variations is a dramatic and highly virtuosic set of variations based on the traditional “La Folia” theme, which Rachmaninoff encountered in Corelli’s music. The work combines brilliant technical writing with dark, lyrical and intensely expressive passages, making it one of Rachmaninoff’s major works for solo piano.
