Victoria’s P1 licence is the red-plate apprenticeship of driving: one year of proving you can behave without a supervisor breathing down your neck. You’ll display red P plates, maintain a strict 0.00 BAC, and forget the phone entirely—no hands-free, no touching, no “just changing the song,” nothing. There’s a peer passenger cap too: generally no more than one passenger aged 16 to under 22 (immediate family exempt), because distraction is a sneaky saboteur. Unlike some states there’s no special P-plater speed cap—stick to the posted limits and your common sense. High-powered vehicle restrictions apply for probationary drivers unless you have an exemption, so save the torque tsunami for later. Do your year cleanly and you move up to P2; if you were 21 or over at test time, you typically start on P2 straight away.
