road safety rules victoria Page 110

Victoria plays by clear road rules, and yes, the fines are as real as the hook turns.

Seatbelts on, child restraints matched to size, and phones only hands‑free for full‑licence drivers—L and P platers can’t touch them at all.

Default limits are 50 km/h in built‑up areas unless signed, 100–110 km/h on open roads, and 40 km/h in signed school zones during the times shown.

Give way to pedestrians when a tram stops and its doors are open, keep left unless overtaking on 80+ roads, and signal like you mean it at roundabouts and lane changes.

U‑turns at traffic lights are only when “U‑turn permitted” says so; otherwise, behave.

Bottom line: drive to the conditions, watch the signs, and if a hook turn terrifies you, you’re not alone—just follow the arrows and breathe.
